Wood on Water of Eastport, MaineWood-burned gifts and home furnishings from Maine.

Welcome to Wood on Water, located on Passamaquoddy Bay in the historic seaside community of Eastport, Maine in Washington County.

We specialize in wood-burned and hand-painted distinctive giftware and home furnishings.

Woodburning, or pyrography, literally means "writing with fire", and is the art of using an electric "pen", or stylus, to etch designs into wood and other natural materials. Various pen tips can be used interchangeably to burn in desired effects such as shading and shadows. In the days before electricity, the woodburning tool for this ancient art was heated in the hearth's fire. Once the image is burned onto the wood, color may be added as well as a stain or finish.

Choose from an extensive inventory of themes ranging from nautical to historical. All pieces are original, unique, and handcrafted in our workshop in Eastport, Maine.

Some popular choices include document/keepsake boxes, treasure chests, and lap desks. Browse to view our newest pieces or contact us directly about custom orders such as pet portraits and/or urns for your beloved dog, cat, bird, or other pet. Custom chair rails, baseboards, wildlife scenes, and local or antique maps can also be created. Perhaps you have a favorite flower or would like a wood-burned piece which highlights your boat. The options are limited only by your imagination.

THE BEST FOR YOUR PET!

We believe that our pets are important members of our families.  Whether  furry, feathered or scaled, we love them  dearly, for the  amazing sentient beings that they are, and deeply mourn them when they gone.
Dave and I feel  honored, when asked to do a Portrait piece, whether an Urn, wall panel, lap desk, or any of our other pieces, and strive to make it as special as  your pet is to you!

SPINONE CLUB OF AMERICA 2010 SPECIALY TROPHIES!

Here are some more Spinone pieces we are working on.....

Spinone Club Of America

The Italian Spinone is an ancient breed of hunting dog, valued for it's endurance, and stamina on hunts. Used primarily for bird hunting, they are known as the "old men" of the hunting breeds, due to their whiskers and human-like expressive eyes!

The SCOA, in Colorado, will be holding their National Specialties in Pennsylvania , in April 2010, and Dave and I have been asked to do the trophies for the show, so we will be busy this winter, helping them out with this. Here is a sample of the dogs I did, and some of the things we are working on. Enjoy!

Trays !

Here are some great Trays We have been doing! The one with the five cats, was a high gloss finish, so forgive us for the glare. The same motif is being done on the tray with the black and white dogs. The last one, which we haven't added the sides to yet, has a wonderful butterfly motif, which was quite a challenge. The not so great photo of the dog, sitting on a couch, was the image I had to work with for this.
Another great gift idea! These run from $75, to $125

The Artistic Process

I use Pyrography, which literally means, "writing with fire"
to add definition, depth, texture, and to extend the life of the image . The burned in lines will stand the test of time.

I use a variety of designs, from ones that I create, to interesting images that I find. I particularly like antique, and vintage images, that have so much to offer. Many of my designs are provided to me by my clients who want a Pet Portrait, or perhaps a Family Crest, Military motif, their boat, or house, Maps, the possibilities are endless! Have an idea of what you would like to see, but don't have an image(s)? I will research it, send you images, and work with you to attain the perfect design for your piece at no extra charge! Box sizes can also be altered to be made larger or smaller!

Much thought and care, go into each piece that Dave and I create, making for a wonderful and most unique gift, for someone, or for yourself!
