Welcome to Wood on Water, located on Passamaquoddy Bay in the historic seaside community of Eastport, Maine in Washington County.

We specialize in wood-burned and hand-painted distinctive giftware and home furnishings.

Woodburning, or pyrography, literally means "writing with fire", and is the art of using an electric "pen", or stylus, to etch designs into wood and other natural materials. Various pen tips can be used interchangeably to burn in desired effects such as shading and shadows. In the days before electricity, the woodburning tool for this ancient art was heated in the hearth's fire. Once the image is burned onto the wood, color may be added as well as a stain or finish.

Choose from an extensive inventory of themes ranging from nautical to historical. All pieces are original, unique, and handcrafted in our workshop in Eastport, Maine.

Some popular choices include document/keepsake boxes, treasure chests, and lap desks. Browse to view our newest pieces or contact us directly about custom orders such as pet portraits and/or urns for your beloved dog, cat, bird, or other pet. Custom chair rails, baseboards, wildlife scenes, and local or antique maps can also be created. Perhaps you have a favorite flower or would like a wood-burned piece which highlights your boat. SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Recently, I was commissioned to do a T.P. tower, for a client, and the results were great ! She was very pleased! Although we do not build these, she was able to get this unique piece for me to design, from a W Virginia company that makes great unfinished home accent pieces, and small home furnishings. The Artistic Process

I use Pyrography, which literally means, "writing with fire" to add definition, depth, texture, and to extend the life of the image . The burned in lines will stand the test of time.

I use a variety of designs, from ones that I create, to interesting images that I find. I particularly like antique, and vintage images, that have so much to offer. Many of my designs are provided to me by my clients who want a Pet Portrait, or perhaps a Family Crest, Military motif, their boat, or house, Maps, the possibilities are endless! Have an idea of what you would like to see, but don't have an image(s)? I will research it, send you images, and work with you to attain the perfect design for your piece at no extra charge! Box sizes can also be altered to be made larger or smaller!

Much thought and care, go into each piece that Dave and I create, making for a wonderful and most unique gift, for someone, or for yourself!

Simply place the cover over your Boxed wine, for a lovely presentation, and then when the wine is done, just lift off the cover, and replace the empty wine box with a new one!!

Our work is always evolving

Custom Sign for Patuxent Flies

Greg Cwalina, is the proud owner of a Maryland based business called Patuxent flies, where he hand ties, beautiful and delicate, but sturdy flies for fly fishing. We made this Paddle for him, which is about 42" long, to use at shows that he does, where it will hang over the entrance to his space, where his fly displays are. As you can see, the name of the business is incorporated into a nice trout/river scene, and a number of Greg's fly collection, adorn the handle. A Big Hit!

VINTAGE IMAGES

I love looking for old images, and reproducing them, in Pyrography. Here are two examples of lap desks, I have done, and will feature in my shop, Wood On Water this season. First is a tile design, by 19th century artist Walter Crane, of a shore bird and fish. Who's feeding who? Second is a Vintage crate label for grapes. Enjoy!
